In 1999, Ecosign was retained by Téléverbier in Valais, Switzerland to conduct a comprehensive Ski Area Design for the resort of Verbier. Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Verbier forms the core of the renowned 4 Vallées ski domain—one of the largest interconnected ski areas in Europe. Ecosign’s work established a strategic framework to guide long-term growth, improve mountain performance, and enhance the overall guest experience.

Verbier occupies a south-facing alpine plateau at approximately 1,500 metres, with terrain extending to over 3,300 metres on Mont Fort, providing exceptional snow reliability and a long operating season. As the central hub of the 4 Vallées, the resort connects multiple valleys and ski sectors across more than 400 kilometres of pistes, serving a broad spectrum of skier abilities.

Ecosign’s scope of work focused on a detailed evaluation of the existing ski area, including lift infrastructure, piste classification, and overall mountain capacity. The analysis assessed lift performance, terrain distribution, and skier circulation patterns to identify inefficiencies and imbalances within the system. A key component of the study was the development of a skier carrying capacity model, ensuring that future growth would maintain comfort, safety, and quality of experience.

Building on this foundation, Ecosign developed a series of concept plans and recommendations aimed at optimizing lift and trail integration. Strategic priorities included improving the balance between uphill capacity and ski terrain, enhancing connectivity between major sectors, and redistributing skier traffic to reduce congestion in high-use areas. Opportunities for lift modernization and system upgrades were identified to increase efficiency and reliability, while aligning with evolving technology and guest expectations.

The resulting master planning framework provided Téléverbier with a clear, data-driven roadmap for long-term development. By aligning infrastructure investment with terrain capacity and skier demand, Ecosign helped position Verbier to sustain its reputation as one of Europe’s premier alpine destinations, while ensuring that growth remains operationally efficient and environmentally responsible.
