After leading the resort's original master planning in the 1980s, Ecosign was re-engaged in 2025 to prepare a new Resort Master Plan under Alberta's All-Season Resorts Act. The plan provides a flexible framework for sustainable, four-season growth, balancing resort village development, accommodation opportunities, employee housing, recreation expansion, and environmental stewardship while supporting Castle's long-term evolution and connection to the southern Canadian Rockies.

In 1984 and 1986, Ecosign’s founder, Paul Mathews, worked with Westcastle Development Corporation to prepare a comprehensive Master Plan for Castle Mountain Resort in Pincher Creek, Alberta. The greenfield resort planning effort included ski area design, resort village and land use planning, financial analysis, and business strategy consultation, helping establish a long-term vision for the mountain's future.

Nearly four decades later, Ecosign’s team was re-engaged by Castle’s new ownership, Castle Mountain Resort Inc., to support the next chapter of its evolution. In 2025, the resort retained Ecosign to prepare a Resort Master Plan in response to Alberta's Bill 35, the All-Season Resorts Act (ASRA), which established a new framework for the evaluation and development of all-season resorts on provincial Crown land.

Ecosign evaluated the resort’s existing and future ski facilities, accommodation opportunities, resort village development potential, and employee housing needs to support long-term growth and operational sustainability. The resulting Master Plan establishes a flexible village framework that accommodates a range of building types and investment opportunities while enhancing the guest experience and reflecting the unique character of the southern Canadian Rockies. Environmental stewardship was woven throughout the planning process, with strategies addressing wildlife considerations, FireSmart planning, erosion control, and responsible growth to help balance future development with the protection of the surrounding landscape.

Developed in collaboration with Castle Mountain Resort, resort stakeholders, community members and local partners, the Master Plan provides a clear roadmap for sustainable development over the coming decades. Ecosign is proud to have contributed to both the original vision for Castle and its continued evolution.
