In 2010, Ecosign Mountain Resort Planners revitalized Switzerland’s Jungfrau Region, conducting a Technical Assessment and Master Plan solutions for the Municipalities of Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. Ourdetailed analysis led to innovative renovation concepts, with lift upgrades pending approval to enhance access and elevate the alpine experience.

The Jungfrau Region is located in the Bernese Alps in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland, approximately 10 kilometres south of Interlaken. Tourism in the Jungfrau region dates back to the early 19th century and consists of three ski areas, two municipalities and two alpine villages. The recreational terrain and the communities are connected by aerial lifts and a series of railways, including the famous cog railway to the “Top of Europe”. In 2010, Ecosign was retained by the Municipalities of Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and the three lift companies to prepare a technical assessment of the region and master plan solutions thereafter.

Our Master Plan concepts were to improve connections from the towns in the valley to the ski area, including the car-free alpine village of Wengen and Mürren. We completed a detailed inventory and analysis of the Grindelwald First, Männlichen, Kleine Scheidegg and Mürren – Schilthorn ski areas and valley staging areas. We then prepared two concepts for each zone. Our analysis identified shortfalls in parking and out of base capacity which led to the evaluation of alternative lift renovation and parking supply concepts.

In the years since the completion of this study, the out of base capacity from Grindelwald has more than doubled with the installation of the Eiger Express and the replacement of the Grindelwald-Holenstein-Männlichen gondola.
