Crans-Montana Switzerland

In 2003, Ecosign conducted a detailed assessment and conceptual design for Crans-Montana’s Barzettes Slalom Stadium, addressing steep terrain challenges for high-level competitions. Using topographic mapping and 3D simulations, we balanced FIS regulations with preserving the natural landscape.
Commissioned by the Commune de Randogne, the project aimed to create a permanent venue for various high-level competitions, including FIS World Cup slaloms, snowboard super-pipe events, and "Big Air" exhibitions.
Ecosign's approach involved evaluating the steepness and orientation of the slopes, which posed challenges for competition requirements. The slopes had an average gradient of 44%, with sections as steep as 60%, exceeding FIS regulations and requiring special consideration. To address these constraints, Ecosign analyzed the terrain using detailed topographic mapping to identify suitable areas for different events. The study included two concept plans—one with minimal terrain modifications and another proposing more extensive soil grading and tree removal to accommodate all planned venues.
Ecosign’s work also incorporated 3D simulations of the site to illustrate the design and possible alterations. Although the project faced challenges due to the steep terrain and southeast-facing slopes, Ecosign’s study ensured that the site could host world-class competitions while preserving the natural landscape as much as possible.
