Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games China
Ecosign played a pivotal role in developing the snow cluster venues and athletes’ villages for the Beijing Winter Olympics bid, ultimately winning the bid preparation over two other international firms. Our design focused on two key areas: Yanqing and Zhangjiakou.
The Yanqing Competition Area, located 70 km northwest of Beijing, spans approximately 16 km2. It was designed to host Alpine Skiing events (Downhill, Super G, Super Combined, Giant Slalom, and Slalom) and featured a Sliding Center for Bobsleigh, Luge, and Skeleton. The plan also included an Athletes’ Village, accommodating 1,300 athletes and officials.
The Zhangjiakou Competition Area, about 220 km northwest of Beijing, covers 66 km2 and hosted events such as Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping, Nordic Combined, Biathlon, Freestyle Skiing, and Snowboard. The Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard venues were located at Genting Secret Garden. This area also included an Athletes’ Village for over 3,000 athletes and officials, alongside media and service centres.
Ecosign led the design efforts in collaboration with ISC IBG, Zehren and Associates Architects, and BARE Advertising. They submitted the preliminary master plan to the International Olympic Committee in January 2015, providing the planning and layout rationale for the snow sports venues, which were integral to the success of Beijing’s bid.
