An established destination resort, Ruka Ski Centre is Finland's largest ski resort based on visitation, offering a breadth of summer and winter activities to its guests. Ecosign has prepared several master plans and concepts for Ruka and its municipality of Kuusamo, improving the guest experience and increasing revenue generation.

Ecosign has worked on multiple projects at Ruka Ski Centre in Finland since 2002, focusing on ski area design, resort village planning, and business consulting. Key developments include the transformation of Ruka’s infrastructure with high-speed lifts and ski-in/ski-out accommodations. We designed West Ruka Village, which opened in 2010, followed by Saarua Village in East Ruka, connected by a pulse gondola that enhances accessibility. Ecosign's plans positively contributed to a boost skier visits, from 274,000 in 2000 to over 500,000 by 2023. Ecosign’s ongoing involvement has played a pivotal role in modernizing the resort and growing its popularity as Finland’s top ski destination.

2002

Ruka Ski Resort is located in the Lapland region of Northern Finland at 66 degrees latitude, over 800km north of Helsinki. With a modest 200m+ of vertical, Ruka is small but mighty, offering over 200 days of skiing from October to May and world class cross-country trails, snowmobiling and other arctic experiences. Since Ecosign's first Master Plan was completed in 2002, Ruka has evolved into a mature, four-season destination resort with two villages, a diverse summer recreation offering, and a doubling of skier visits over 20 years, drawing 500,000 skier visits annually.

2003

An established destination resort, Ruka offers numerous summer and winter activities to its guests. Ecosign began work in Ruka in 2002, completing a Ski Area Master Plan that improved visitor circulation, revitalized the ski resort’s aging infrastructure, and densified ski-in/ski-out accommodation. Subsequent to preparation of a detailed resort village design, we assisted the Kuusamo Municipality and ski area operator to adopt a strategy to facilitate development. After several years of planning and construction, the West Ruka Village opened in 2010.

2011

When the original Ski Bistro Restaurant burnt to the ground in 2010, Ruka’s operations team harnessed this opportunity to rebuild the restaurant in a location that better integrated with the village and children's area, in the gentle terrain on the east side of the resort.

2016

The vision for the Village-to-Village (V2V) pulse gondola was inspired by the success of the pedestrian-friendly West Ruka Village and the goal of creating an efficient, vehicle-free connection between the two sides of the mountain. The V2V gondola links the vibrant commercial centre of the West Ruka Village with the family-oriented Saarua Village, while its mid-station at the apex offers a high-quality beginner ski slope. Building on this concept, Ruka Resort has added a mountain restaurant and outdoor sauna at the mid-station, providing stunning views of Valtavaara National Park. Meanwhile, the Saarua Village children’s area has become a lively hub, located at the heart of the new Valley Village hotel next to the rebuilt Ski Bistro. Additional projects completed in 2016 include:

  • FIS Competitive Venue Concept Plan,
  • Etutoli D6C, and
  • Saaura Village Master Plan

Planning for new mountain facilities and the Saaura Village progressed steadily through 2016. During this time, the high-speed Tutuola six-passenger chairlift was constructed alongside detailed design work for the V2V pulse gondola. As the Saaura Village master plan evolved to incorporate the V2V connection, approval was granted to begin construction on its first building in 2019: the Ruka Valley Hotel and apartments.

2021

Ecosign was commissioned by the Town of Kuusamo in 2021 to create a master plan for Ruka Stadium, with the goal of enhancing commercial tourism, education, and year-round activities. A key challenge was integrating the stadium with the Ruka Ski Resort while carefully planning roads, pedestrian flow, and skier circulation, all while preserving space for international events. The Master Plan proposes an Olympic training centre, a junior high school, a new technical building for competitive events, employee rental housing, a hotel, and apartments. This vision demonstrates how the existing venue—currently inactive for much of the year—can be transformed into a dynamic hub with diverse facilities that strengthen the local community and support Ruka’s resort economy throughout all seasons.

2022

Ruka opened the new Masto high-speed lift for the 2023-2024 season, Finland's first 8-passenger chairlift. The Masto Chair replaced two T-bars, providing comfortable access to new beginner slopes and tree skiing areas. Ecosign prepared the lift and trail plans for Masto, Pessari and Vuosseli in 2022-2023, continuing Ruka's evolution to becoming one of Finland's most successful four-season destination mountain resorts.

2023

In 2023, Ecosign prepared a comprehensive plan for a new neighbourhood on the east side of the resort, envisioned as a thoughtfully balanced mix of tourist accommodations, second homes, and residential areas to support the resort’s growing permanent population. The East Ruka development is strategically connected to the ski area via a new access T-bar, ensuring direct ski-in/ski-out convenience for residents and visitors. This approach reflects Ecosign’s longstanding practice of efficient design that minimizes dependence on single-occupancy vehicles, thereby reducing traffic congestion and parking demand across the resort. By prioritizing integrated access and compact development patterns, the plan not only enhances the guest experience but also supports sustainable growth and environmental stewardship for the future of Ruka Resort.

“I can truly recommend Ecosign as a reliable long time partner, delivering always the newest ideas and opinions of the resort business and changes in the market and working hard to achieve functioning, customers oriented business minded planning and problem solving.”
