The Sierra Nevada Ski Resort, located 30km from the city of Granada (population 232,000) in southeastern Spain, is Europe’s southernmost ski centre. Between 1990 and 1993, Ecosign developed the Sierra Nevada Master Plan in preparation for hosting the 1996 World Alpine Skiing Championships, including improvements and additions to the existing ski and base areas.

Prior to the 1996 World Championships, a new village with 4,000 beds was constructed on top of a four-level, 3,000 vehicle parking structure as per Ecosign’s design concept. The new village consisted of two hotels and four apartment buildings with 10,400m2 of associated commercial and skier service space. Construction of the $200M CAD project was completed in December of 1995, and spurred associated developments on private lands.

Since 2003, Ecosign has worked on a project-by-project basis on the Sierra Nevada Ski Resort, designing lift terminals, pistes, a half-pipe, a terrain park, skier staging areas, and day skier parking. The objective is to support the resort’s growth from 1.2 million to 1.8 million skier visits per season. Currently, the resort is full to capacity during most winter weekends.

1990

In preparation of hosting the FIS World Skiing Championships in 1995, Ecosign was hired in early 1990 to design the new venues and renovate the existing ski area at Sierra Nevada. Ecosign was hired to design a whole new concept for a new urban area as well, to be built on the existing parking lots at the base level of the Al Andalus Gondola. Construction of the new urban area commenced in 1992 and was complete in the fall of 1994, prior to the World Championships in 1995.

03-04

Ecosign updated the Master Plan to expand the ski area, design new lift terminals, and propose a second "upper" village with 2,800 beds and additional skier facilities.

2019 +

In 2019, Ecosign proposed a Master Plan update, focusing on developments in the Prado Redondo area and enhancing connectivity between villages. Our team continues working on projects for Sierra Nevada Ski Resort including new lifts, pistes, and village enhancements. All our designs balance an increase in skier capacity while supporting the resort's growth.
