A ski route has existed for many decades between the Rothorn and Saas-Fee ski areas of Switzerland.

A lift connection between these two world-famous high alpine ski resorts had been in consideration for many years, and in 2000, Ecosign was commissioned by Luftseilbahnen Saas-Fee AG and Zermatter Rothornbahn AG to complete a technical assessment. The Täsch Valley, located between the two high alpine ski resorts, provided the terrain considered the most logical link between the two ski areas.

Ecosign’s Regional Tourism Plan proposed connecting the two ski areas with four detachable six-passenger chairlifts and associated pistes. The connection travels from Fluealp in Rothorn up to Spitzi Flue, through the Täsch Valley, and up to the ridge below Allalinhorn at Saas-Fee. By developing pistes beside these lifts, skiers can ski rather than download on these lifts, making the connection between the ski areas a much more enjoyable experience. The pistes also allowed the lifts to be used as return cycle skiing as well as transportation. The lifts proposed are directly connected station-to-station, allowing two-way transportation of foot passengers as well.
