The Golden Analysis Study in Armenia explored the feasibility of developing a ski area in the Aparan region to drive economic development and tourism visitation.
After satellite mapping, research and physical site exploration, five mountains were selected to discern their suitability for development. The first explored was Maymekh Mountain, with the potential to be the largest ski resort in the country. Located 10 kilometres west of the City of Vanadzor (population 86,000), the project envisioned 15 lifts and a skier capacity of 17,500, fulfilling the purpose of driving winter tourism to the area. After reviewing geological, weather and solar data, project focus shifted from Maymekh to Yeghipatrush Mountain, which was identified as the best mountain for skiing and resort development. In 2021, the Armenian government approved of the development, and in 2022 construction commenced.
This project is an example of how we analyze the topography within a set altitude range to identify and plan for ideal slope aspects, lift locations, and supportive base lands for village centres that include various accommodation formats, commercial buildings (spa, conference, etc.), recreational activities and day use parking infrastructure.
