Mammoth Mountain, USA

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in Mammoth Lakes, CA was developed by one of the leading pioneers of the American ski industry, Mr. Dave McCoy and his wife Roma. Under Dave’s guidance, Mammoth grew to be the largest, most-frequented ski area in the United States. In 1996 it was time to look at the future for the next generation and Ecosign was hired to prepare a new Master Plan for Mammoth Mountain to set down Dave’s vision for future generations.

At the time, Mammoth was one of North America’s largest ski areas with a two-section bi-cable gondola and 36 fix grip chairlifts. The challenge at Mammoth was how to completely renovate and update the facilities at Mammoth applying new lift, snowmaking and grooming technologies. The resulting plans called for a substantial reduction in the overall number of lifts to achieve operating efficiencies, while at the same time improving the guests’ comfort, safety and experience and adding capacity. The new Ecosign Master Plan, completed in 1997, was implemented by new the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Rusty Gregory in short order with the installation of seven new detachable-grip chairlifts, a new two-section, 8-passenger gondola from the Main Lodge to Mid Chalet and to the Summit and a new 15 passenger gondola from the new North Village to the Canyon Lodge. Skier Services were not overlooked and the Canyon and Mid-Chalet underwent extensive renovations to provide first-rate services for skiers and snowboarders. In Bound Terrain Park was also implemented.

Ecosign gratefully acknowledges the tremendous amount of beneficial input we received from Rusty Gregory’s top managers including Pam Murphy, Bill Cockroft, Dennis Agee, Heimo Latinig and Clifford Mann.
